Cathar country

Situated between the Montagne Noire to the north and the Pyrénées to the south, and bordered to the east by the Mediterranean, Pays Cathare is named after a religion which disappeared in the 14th century, but whose history continues to shape the identity of the Aude region. Although its Mediterranean climate is most favourable to relaxing, it would be a shame to miss the cultural treasures of the Pays Cathare.

Start with Carcassonne, a medieval fortress with 52 towers, linked by 3km of fortified walls, which is a unique example of medieval architecture in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The architectural interest of the town does not stop there; you can also discover the 12th century castle and the basilica of Saint Nazaire, well-known for its stained glass.

Closer to the Mediterranean, the town of Narbonne has a very varied cultural heritage as well as plenty of outdoor activities including walking, cycling, horse riding, sea angling and river cruises. It also has fine sandy beaches along the Mediterranean coast, perfect for relaxing.

Pays Cathare has many gourmet specialities including fine wines (Cabardès, Fitou and Minervois) and traditional cassoulet. The product of many centuries of savoir-faire, the gastronomy of Pays Cathare is focused on modernity and constantly reinvents itself.
