Grotte de Clamouse (Cave)
As you approach the Grotte de Clamouse, you enter the Gorges de l’Hérault, the lush green backbone of the valley. When you arrive in the villages of Saint-Jean-de-Fos and Causse-de-la-Selle at the heart of Occitanie, look carefully at the rustic landscape, dominated by limestone rocks.
The Grotte de Clamouse Cave in the Gorges de l’Hérault
Not far from here is the famous Pont du Diable bridge where, according to legend, the Devil was tricked by Saint Guilhem, patron saint of the area, before being banished to the depths of the « black chasm », beneath the bridge.
The Grotte de Clamouse is an underground world free from the demons and evil charms ! Awarded 3 stars by Michelin green guide, the cave, discovered by amateur cavers in 1945, is a friendly attraction of fascinating mineral beauty. Protected by the status of a « scientific and picturesque site», it is open to everyone. The large, rich network of caves provide an opportunity to make young visitors aware of the wonders and fragility of nature – it’s never too early to start !
A family outing to the Grotte de Clamouse
The guided tour takes 1 hour and 20 minutes along a fascinating 900m trail. The visit starts with a mini-film before you go down to the cave. The guides who accompany you are full of enthusiasm and good at explaining the features you pass by, like the origins of the soda straws on the walls of the « cemetery » or how the labyrinth on the intermediate level was formed. Admire the amazing stalactites, stalagmites and stone draperies along the way. During the tour you will be treated to the Magnificat, a display created by the French composer Christophe Guyard.
Apart from the traditional visit to the Grotte de Clamouse, there is an alternative way to explore the caves at the Spéléopark, an underground adventure trail. A memorable 3-hour discovery experience which promises fun and thrills for all the family.
